In 2014, RAIL learned about high tunnels, an inexpensive technology that could be used to extend the growing season by two months. RAIL saw how this innovation could make small-scale agriculture more productive in Wyoming County. RAIL started working with USDA to connect residents to government resources that help fund high tunnel construction. RAIL also wanted residents to see what a high tunnel is capable of, so this led to a volunteer construction project in 2015. In 2015, volunteers from Mullens and around the country came together to build a season-extending, vegetable-producing high tunnel at the MOC.
