Gift will support new Farming for Health and Wealth Program
RAIL has received $2,800 from the Food Lion Charitable Foundation. RAIL will use the gift to support a program of supporting families in growing vegetables and other products from the land. The program is labeled "FARMING FOR HEALTH AND WEALTH". (FFHAW)
Dewey Houck, on behalf of the RAIL board and staff expresses his appreciation to Food Lion for their support of such a worthy project.
Jack Seitz, a Dickinson College graduate, is heading a program to teach and assist families that have a need, or desire to supplement their food supply through gardening. FFHAW will recruit persons that have an interest in gardening for immediate consumption and/or preserving for later use. The program also encourages growing extra for selling through a farmers market system presently being established along the Coal Heritage Trail. FFHAW supports all phases of providing food from the land from back yard gardens to growing goats on an abandoned strip mine. Sites are being made available for those that do not have space. Junior Achievement has already invested in FFHAW to grow Shiitake mushrooms and plant Ramps on appropriate mountainsides.
